Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to our Fifth Grade Class! I am thrilled to be your child's teacher this school year, and I am certain it will be one amazing journey! I am so excited to be a part of the Selwyn Elementary School Family! This is my 13th year teaching at Selwyn, and I consider it a joy to be surrounded by an amazing staff and tons of bright students each school day!
Before teaching at Selwyn, I had experience within both the private and public school settings. I began my teaching career at Carmel Christian School in Matthews, NC teaching 5th, 6th and 7th grade electives. From there, I spent 7.5 years as a teacher at Lake Wylie Elementary School. While most of my teaching experience has been as a Third Grade teacher, I have also worked as a Literacy Coach and a 2nd/3rd Grade multi-age teacher. I am excited about being back in the 5th grade this year! Several years ago, I completed a year of rigorous coursework at Queens University of Charlotte to become a certified Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) teacher. I guess I still love learning as much as I love teaching! My true passion is teaching reading, and I hope that some of my love for literature rubs-off on your child this year!
In addition to being a teacher, I am also a wife and a mother to our two amazing children. My first love is certainly being a mother, and I am so grateful to be able to teach at Selwyn where my own children attended! Our son Paxson is an Eleventh Grader this year at Myers Park, and our daughter Gracie Myers is a Ninth Grader, also at Myers Park. When not at school I can be found supporting my kids in their after-school activities. Paxson is on both the Varsity Football and Varsity Baseball teams at MPHS and Gracie Myers is a JV Cheerleader at MPHS and also a member of the Company at Jami Masters School of Dance. I love spending time with my family, taking lots of pictures, enjoying time with my Book Club friends, and going on long walks! Some of my other favorite things to do are to go on family vacations to the beach, watch Wheel of Fortune, cheer on the UNC Tar Heels, and I am known to stop by McAlister's Deli to grab a glass of iced tea...my husband Bill gets embarrassed that they know me by name!
I am looking forward to working alongside both you and your child this school year! It is my hope that they have a memorable 5th grade school year!
Fondly,
Mrs. Chalfant
